REL 2239 - Religion and ViolenceCredits: 4 Although practitioners often think of religion as a force fostering peace and good will, violence seems to be endemic to religion. In the name of religion people engage in violence against other people (e.g., religious wars and crusades), against other species (e.g., animal sacrifice), and even against themselves (e.g., in some forms of asceticism). This course explores various forms of religious violence and examines several answers to the question, “Why are religion and violence so often connected?”.
