ART 502 - Oil Painting

Credits: 3
In this comprehensive painting course, students will learn basic oil painting techniques, while working on fundamental principles of studio art: development of drawing skills, ability to freely compose and sketch ideas for larger works, and attention to detail. The historical development of this versatile technique will be discussed, and as a practical study, students will paint a copy of an acknowledged masterpiece. Students will also discuss and develop objective criteria for judging artwork. Course assignments will cover the most important genres: still life, portrait, landscape and free composition. The personal tastes and inclinations of each student will be encouraged in home projects and a free composition.
