Physics Major


Return to: Academic Programs of Study Students interested in pursuing physics as a major have two paths open to them for their first year.
For students who place into or above MAT1117 (Calculus 1):
In the Fall: Students should enroll in PHY1101 (General Physics 1) and the associated laboratory course (PHY1001), as well as Calculus 1 or Calculus 2 (based on placement).
In the Spring: Students should take General Physics 2 (PHY1102) and the associated laboratory course (PHY1001) and Calculus 2, if necessary.
For students who place lower than MAT1117 (Calculus 1):
In the Fall: Students should enroll in either Electronics Made Simple (GSC1121) or Understanding the Universe (GSC1106), both of which count as electives for the Physics major. Students should also enroll in the highest level mathematics course based on placement.
In the Spring: Students should enroll the other GSC course listed above and the next higher mathematics course.
