Understanding race, power and privilege calls for leaders who have the courage, knowledge, and skills to engage in thoughtful conversation, planning and action to advance equity in education and society at large. McDaniel’s Master of Equity and Excellence in Education program is designed to synthesize theory, research and practice to equip educators, school personnel and administrators across educational disciplines to advance educational justice and lead change to create a school and community culture of equity and excellence.

Participants will examine the foundations of becoming a culturally responsive social justice leader and educator and gain skills to create more equitable learning environments for students of diverse backgrounds. Coursework will also explore instructional strategies and curriculum materials which challenge current oppressive structures in school systems and assist participants in creating and influencing policies that affect classrooms and communities.

Participants will also take part in a capstone experience or project that connects what participants have learned to overarching program outcomes. The capstone project is designed to demonstrate the student’s ability to identify concrete strategies for building inclusive communities and learning environments where access, equity and inclusion are central tenets.

Admissions Requirements

Candidates required to submit:

Application for graduate study (online) - www.mcdaniel.edu/grad
Official transcripts conferring bachelor’s degree (minimum of 3.00 GPA*) from an accredited institution; graduate transcripts if applicable.
Copy of a Teaching or Specialist Certificate - Maryland State Department of Education Standard Professional Certificate (SPC I or SPC II), Professional Eligibility Certification (PEC), or Advanced Professional Certificate (APC). Evidence of completion of teacher preparation program via transcript and passing Praxis II scores can be accepted in lieu of teacher certification. Teachers who hold a license or certification from states outside of Maryland are eligible and must provide a copy of teaching certificate. Provisional or conditional certificate holders should discuss program options with the Graduate and Professional Studies office.
The heavy emphasis on social justice in schools and educational settings requires participants to be familiar with these settings or to have experience working in a closely related organization which has a focus on education.

Exit Requirements:

Students must successfully complete all courses with a cumulative 3.0 GPA and must successfully complete the capstone project.

Students who successfully complete McDaniel’s Post-bachelor’s certificate may build on this credential and may complete a master’s degree in Elementary or Secondary Education by completing an additional 15 credit hours and the capstone project. Students completing the post-bachelor’s certificate can transfer courses if taken within six years of taking their first course.
