Chemistry Major - American Chemical Society Specialization

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Majors, Minors & Distinctions A - Z

Department of Chemistry

Department Chair: Michael Polen, Ph.D.

Description

Chemistry is the study of the world around us through the lens of atoms and molecules. The study of chemistry includes chemical and physical properties, reactions, kinetics, thermodynamics, and analytical and computational methods. These are accomplished through both theoretical and hands-on experiences. Compared to the standard chemistry major, the American Chemical Society (ACS) specialization is a more rigorous curriculum. Students must complete more courses including Biochemistry and Calculus 2.

The chemistry major with ACS specialization gives students a strong foundation in chemical knowledge and experimentation in preparation for either industry or advanced studies. Students interested in the ACS specialization typically desire to do advanced schooling and have a firm background to do so.

Departmental Writing Requirement:

The Department of Chemistry extends writing throughout the major. Students majoring in Chemistry: American Chemical Society are required to take CHE 3205 and CHE 4493, as noted with the # symbol.

Total Credit Hours: 70

Requirements for Departmental Honors

Honors in Chemistry will be awarded to graduating seniors who have earned at least a 3.50 grade point average in all courses required for the particular major, who have performed an independent laboratory research project (including a written paper and an oral presentation concerning the project), and who are recommended by the Department.
