Overview
This program offers graduate students the opportunity to self-design an academic plan in collaboration with the program coordinator to meet a student’s individual professional needs. This program does not lead to state certification. Admission and Full-Acceptance
Initial Admission
Initial admission is granted after submitted:
- the Application for Graduate Study with non-refundable fee;
- Official transcripts certifying completion of an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution with a minimum grade point average of 2.75.
Full Acceptance
Full acceptance is granted with the approval of the program coordinator to candidates who have:
- submitted two letters of recommendation;
- successfully completed a minimum of nine (9) credits in their program of study.
Courses
Candidates should schedule a meeting with the program coordinator upon initial admission to develop their individual program of study. The program of study will likely include but not be limited to courses in assessment, curriculum, instruction, technology, and research. The program requires a capstone experience of the candidate’s choice; either comprehensive examination or thesis. Elementary Mathematics Specialization
This specialization offers candidates the opportunity to complete coursework and related experiences in the areas of mathematics education at the elementary school level. Program graduates will be positioned to qualify for positions as elementary mathematics teacher specialists or as an elementary mathematics specialist or coach. At this writing the program does not lead to state certification.
Requirements for admission to the program include: Elementary classroom teaching experience and initial certification in elementary or early childhood education; Passing Praxis II scores, three references.
The program will include courses in mathematics, mathematics pedagogy, curriculum, assessment, supervision, research, and a school-based internship. The capstone project of the elementary mathematics specialization program is a thesis. |
