Course-level Designations
Courses of instruction are designated by a system of four-digit numbers within each department. The first digit in the number indicates the class standing that a student must attain to be eligible for the course. To interpret the numbering system, students need to know that:
- Courses at the 1000-level are primarily designed for students new to a subject area, often first-year students. These courses focus on foundational concepts, basic skills, and introductory material. They generally have little to no prerequisites and often serve as gateways to higher-level courses within a major or as general education requirements. In some departments, placement exams, AP tests, or dual enrollment credits can be used as a substitute for 1000-level courses.
- Courses at the 2000-level are generally designed for students who are more advanced in a field of study. These courses tend to reinforce and build upon the knowledge and skills developed in 1000-level courses. In some cases, students can take a 2000-level course without prerequisites and in many majors, students can take 2000-level courses as early as their first year.
- Courses at the 3000-level are designed for advanced majors and minors in a specific field, tend to be smaller in overall size, and often these courses are part of a specific major requirement. Most 3000-level courses have prerequisites and in some majors these courses are part of the advanced writing requirement. For some programs, the 3000-level courses may be part of a requirement for certifications or professional licensure. Students should consult with their academic advisor before signing up for a 3000-level course.
- Courses at the 4000-level are designed for seniors or the most advanced majors, they most often have prerequisites and other requirements. These courses are opportunities for students to demonstrate mastery of some core concepts or skills within a major. Senior capstones are taught at the 4000-level.
