MUS 1160 - Drumming from Africa to the AmericasCredits: 4 This course teaches students the techniques and rhythms of three related drumming styles. We start the semester in Ghana with music of the Ewe and Asante people. From there we follow the progression of West African music to the Americas, first to Cuba and the music of the bata drums, which accompany the rituals of the Afro Cuban religion of Santeria, and then to the United States where we learn some of the rhythms from New Orleans, the place that West African music first became part of US culture.
