EDU 571 - Reimagining the Mathematics Classroom Credits: 1-3 This course is for mentor teachers partnering with a McDaniel College teacher candidate (referred to as “teacher candidate” or “McDaniel intern”) enrolled in EDU 3314/556 Teaching Elementary Mathematics to create a professional learning community (PLC) between the mentor teachers, teacher candidates, and course instructor to develop effective teaching practices in mathematics. Important course topics include connecting the content and pedagogy related to number and operations, operations and algebraic thinking, measurement and data, and geometry, all guided by the content domains of
the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics (CCSSO, 2010). The course will also address the Standards for Mathematical Practice and NCTM’s (2014) Effective Teaching Practices to create
productive learning environments that support student participation, active engagement, and sense-making.
