GNI 1131 - Discovering Berlin & Beyond

Credits: 2
In the decades since it’s ruin at the end of WW II, Berlin has emerged from the Cold War’s grip of the Soviet Union and virtual isolation as an island of freedom behind the Iron Curtain. Once again Germany’s capital has become one of Europe’s most exciting cities.

Here the rich historical past blends effortlessly with the political and cultural currents that are shaping the continent’s future. Today, the city is a magnet for artists, writers, musicians and scholars, as well as politicians. Boasting a superb transportation system, and rich cultural diversity, the city offers to millions of visitors each year the opportunity to explore and learn about the fascinating past and soak in the enthralling present day. Here you encounter remnants of the Berlin Wall a few steps away from cutting-edge art and music scenes. Our trip will also consist of guided tours of the concentration camps, multiple museums, and famous landmarks. Students will explore the surrounding areas of Berlin, including several day trips to nearby cities and a visit to the German countryside. While in the countryside, students will experience the physical, mental and spiritual benefits of interacting and participating in a dogsled tour with Siberian huskies that are trained to work with student groups and people with disabilities. Berlin and the surrounding areas offer a welcoming array of historical and cultural treasures awaiting our discovery.

All McDaniel College students are encouraged to study abroad. This course is specifically designed to include students from diverse backgrounds and needs. The major goal of this experience is to increase the international knowledge of students who may not typically be able to study abroad because of a specific need or disability. Not only will our students experience another culture, they will also increase confidence and strengthen personal identity, flexibility, and creativity.
