AHY 3308 - World Contemporary ArtCredits: 4 This course explores some of the major transformations of the global art industry during the last five decades and will do so by capitalizing on the situatedness of this period of unrest partly at least in Central-Eastern Europe. Following a re-draft of definitions of the major actors in this process (ranging from ‘art-history’ to ‘neo-liberal urbanism’, ‘local intervention’ and beyond) students read some of the seminal texts of this discourse, explore some collaborative/participatory art activities in Budapest and will engage in visual activism. In-class discussions of global trends and issues will be furthered by local actions and events where students will organize and give feedback. The major goal of the course is to re-situate aesthetics, a fundamental component of the Western definition of art, by understanding what the postcolonial discourse means. The semester will be completed with a final research paper. Offered in Budapest only. McDaniel Plan: International; Textual Analysis
