HIS 3314 - Multicultural EuropeCredits: 4 Ethnic and religious diversity have been part of Europe’s history since ancient times. In the modern era European societies wavered between inclusive models of citizenship and violence in pursuit of national or racial purity. Tensions took new forms after World War II as immigrants from former colonies, poorer economies and conflict zones established communities from Portugal to Sweden. This course will examine the experiences of these new Europeans as religious and racial minorities. It will show how receiving societies have struggled to accommodate racial and religious differences. Special attention will be paid to Great Britain and France, where postwar migration was linked to the loss of empire. McDaniel Plan: International; Social, Cultural and Historical Understanding
