San Pedro de Atacama is a small oasis town located in the driest desert in the world, the Atacama desert in Chile, mostly inhabited for ancient indigenous people, explorers, and scientists who work on its well-known international astronomical observatories. This short-term study abroad program will offer students the opportunity to first-hand experience social, cultural, health, and environmental issues that San Pedro de Atacama faces, and articulate effective community service with local communities.
