SPA 3325 - Women in Latin AmericaCredits: 4 In this course, we will examine women’s experiences and contributions to the cultural heritage of Latin America. Our initial focus will be on women’s lives and experiences on both sides of the Atlantic leading up to the 1492 Encounter. We will read first-person narratives by women of European, indigenous, and African descent as we progress chronologically from the Colonial period to the present. Our examination of narrative agency will extend beyond studying the written word to include theater, art, music, dance, and film. What are the cultural forces that have shaped women’s lives throughout Latin America’s history, and how have women shaped the culture in ways not often examined historically? Finally, how are women of all backgrounds shaping Latin American and U.S. Latinx culture today? Prerequisite(s) SPA-2230 or higher
