CIN 3305 - Queer Cinema

Credits: 4
This course provides an introduction to the study of LGBTQ+ cinema within a global framework. We will be watching a film every week, representing different cultures and genres, and discussing it in a historical, social, political and cultural context. We will also be discussing the visual and aesthetic qualities and narrative strategies of each film, and the relationship between the theme, dramaturgy and the broader context. We will examine how cinema participated in the construction of stereotypes, tropes, and cultural perception of non-normative sexual and gender identities. We will also be the discussing the developing and changing philosophies of queer representation as embodied by the films, with special emphasis on major film directors and their influences.
