DED 511 - Foundations of Deaf Education

This course explores how Deaf education intersects with language acquisition and bilingual education within a historical context, with an emphasis on the contrasting medical/pathological and cultural views of Deaf people. The course will examine a range of factors such as legal, educational, social, and cultural influences on how Deaf learners are taught and placed. They will also analyze key federal, state, and local laws affecting Deaf education. The course includes an analysis of what defines high quality educational services for Deaf learners and introduces foundational teaching theories and learning philosophies relevant to the field.
