Cognitive science isn’t an academic discipline in itself; it is a interdisciplinary field that brings together the many disciplines that study the mind/brain. As such, Cognitive Science is not defined by a single methodology or institutional structure; but rather, by the phenomenon it investigates: cognition.

Cognitive science brings together those who investigate, for example, the neurobiological mechanisms of long-term potentiation with those who investigate learning and memory, and it unites those who investigate the mind via artificial intelligence with those who engage in philosophical analysis.

The goal, therefore, of any program in Cognitive Science is not to impart a pre-established corpus of knowledge, but rather to cultivate an understanding of how different disciplines investigate the mind. Our minor in Cognitive Science does not seek to replace the traditional disciplines that investigate the mind, but rather is designed to encourage dialogue and collaboration between these fields.
