German Major

To major in German you must complete a minimum of:

  • 44 hours if you complete the residency requirement through study abroad or
  • 46 hours if you complete the residency requirement by living in the German House.

All students must start by taking the Placement Test. Students may place at the 1101, 1103, 2000 level or higher. Those placing at the 2000 level or higher are exempt from taking lower level courses. Up to 12 credits towards the Major may be waived for students entering at the upper intermediate level or higher.

Study Abroad


One semester spent studying abroad with a minimum of a 12-week residency requirement (at least 60% of the credits must be taken in German), or equivalent language immersion experience living and working in a French speaking country (at the discretion of the department and with prior approval), or one year in residence in the French language house on campus (1 credit/semester).
