Education Minor

Note that course requirements for the Education Minor are subject to change in order to meet Maryland State Department of Education certification regulations and accreditation requirements.

Elementary

Students interested in teaching at the elementary level (grades 1-6) in Maryland public schools may major in any academic program at McDaniel College and complete a core set of elementary education requirements.  Typically, elementary education minors choose to major in Psychology  or Sociology  , areas which address human growth and development and the behavior of individuals in groups, as these majors are most applicable to developing learners in the elementary grades.  Upon completion of McDaniel’s approved elementary education program, and the Bachelor’s degree with the minor in education, candidates will be eligible for initial teaching certification at the elementary level in Maryland.  Students who desire certification in another state should become familiar with certification requirements in that state and discuss plans with an education advisor.

Secondary

In some academic areas, specific courses are required of education minors.  Students are encouraged to meet with department advisors as soon as possible to incorporate these required courses in their program planning for the major.  Please note that certification to teach Social Studies requires a major in History, Political Science and International Studies, or Sociology.  Upon completion of McDaniel’s approved program in the subject area, and the Bachelor’s degree with the minor in education, candidates will be eligible for initial teaching certification at the secondary level in Maryland.  Students who desire certification in another state should become familiar with certification requirements in that state and discuss plans with an education advisor.
