Communication – Theatre Arts Dual Major

Two dual majors are possible, one in Interpersonal Communication and Interactive Theatre, another in Theatre, Film and Video Production. Students pursuing a dual major in Communication and Theatre Arts must complete one of these dual majors in its entirety.

The dual major in Interpersonal Communication and Interactive Theatre is designed for students interested in work or further study in professions requiring active interpersonal communication skills. The major promotes the ability to take leadership roles in interpersonal and group activities which require both verbal and embodied forms of communication, including but not limited to public speaking, intercultural communication, education, drama therapy and interactive theatre work in the community.

The dual major in Theatre, Film and Video Production is designed for students interested in exploring the range of skills required to produce dramatic and narrative stories through embodied performance, both in the theatre and in the mass media. Actors, directors, designers and technicians working professionally in theatre, film and video must expect to be proficient in each area. This major prepares students for work and further study in these areas.

Students in either dual major are eligible for departmental honors in Communication, or Theatre Arts, or both. They must maintain and graduate with a 3.5 grade-point average in the department in which they are applying, and should fulfill any other requirements for departmental honors in that department.

Students pursuing the dual major in Interpersonal Communication and Interactive Theatre should expect to take three or four courses each year in the major. Students are encouraged to begin their studies with THE 1117 and COM 1102, and to take either THE 1113 or COM 1110 in the first year. Since some advanced courses are offered in rotation, majors should plan their programs carefully in subsequent years so that they are able to take courses of the greatest interest to them.

If they choose to do so, students in Interpersonal Communication and Interactive Theatre will be able to satisfy, in whole or in part, college requirements in Textual Analysis; Creative Expression; Social, Cultural and Historical Understanding; and Global Citizenship.
