History Major with Education Minor

Note that course requirements for the Education Minor are subject to change in order to meet Maryland State Department of Education certification regulations and accreditation requirements.

Elementary Certification

Students interested in teaching at the elementary level (grades 1-6) in Maryland public schools may major in any academic program at McDaniel College and complete a core set of elementary education requirements .

Secondary Certification

Students may earn Maryland certification in Social Studies at the secondary level (7-12) by completing a McDaniel College degree requirements and the following:

History major

Completion of basic History major and the following required courses.

HIS 2219 - 19th-Century Europe: Age of Anxiety
HIS 2220 - 20th-Century Europe
HIS 1109 - Survey of Modern U.S. History, 1865-2000
HIS 2224 - Becoming American: Topics in American History
Choose one of the following:
HIS 2231 - History of East Asia to 1600
HIS 2232 - History of East Asia since 1600
HIS 3331 - Gender and the Family in China

Education minor

Completion of all Secondary Education minor requirements and the following required courses:

Required specific courses

EDU 3145 - PDS Field Practicum in Secondary Social Studies
EDU 4432 - Secondary Student Teaching (Middle School)
EDU 4434 - Secondary Student Teaching (High School)
