1. Two courses in critical and analytical approaches to literature:
2. One 4-credit writing course in English above the 1000 level
3. One course on the nature and structure of language, from:
4. Two British literature courses, one of which must be about British literature before 1660.
5. One course about American literature
6. One course that examines a historically underrepresented literature, from:
7. Five 4-credit electives in literature, English language, or writing above the 1000 level

DEPARTMENTAL WRITING REQUIREMENT: Students who major in English are required to take a second writing course at the 2000 level or above. The 4 credits will be taken as Gen Ed credits and will not apply to the major. Of the two upper-level writing courses English majors will take, at least one of them must focus on a form of workplace communication. The courses that constitute workplace communication are:
