Spanish Major with Education Minor


Note that course requirements for the Education Minor are subject to change in order to meet Maryland State Department of Education certification regulations and accreditation requirements.

Maryland certification in the teaching of world language requires candidates to take and pass the Oral Proficiency Inventory (OPI) offered by the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL).  Candidates should contact the Teacher Placement Office in the Education Department for scheduling arrangements.

Elementary Certification


Students interested in teaching at the elementary level (grades 1-6) in Maryland public schools may major in any academic program at McDaniel College and complete a core set of elementary education requirements.

Secondary Certification


Students may earn Maryland certification in Spanish at the PreK-12 level by completing McDaniel College degree requirements and the following:

Spanish major


  • Completion of Spanish  major
  • Completion of either SPA 3303  Cultura Latinoamericana Contemporánea or SPA 3309  Historia cultural de España with the recommendation that candidates take both.

Education minor


  •  Completion of all Secondary Education minor requirements and the following required courses:
