Five-Year B.A./M.S. Program - Teaching: Secondary Education


Note that course requirements for the Education Minor are subject to change in order to meet Maryland State Department of Education certification regulations and accreditation requirements.

The program provides undergraduate teacher candidates with an option to complete an initial teaching certification five year program that also leads to a Master’s degree in Teaching: Secondary Education.  The teacher certification areas include: Social Studies (history, political science, and sociology), English, Science (biology, chemistry, and physics), Mathematics, and the following world languages – French, German, and Spanish.  During the four year undergraduate program, candidates complete all requirements for their major plus any supplementary content coursework required for their certification area.  In addition, undergraduate students take three undergraduate education courses and one course at the graduate level.  In the fifth year, candidates continue to complete the rest of the courses at the Master’s degree level.  Upon completion of four years, a successful candidate will earn a Bachelor’s degree in the major and at the conclusion of the fifth year, a Master’s degree and teacher certification in their respective field of Secondary Education.

  

Admissions Requirements


  1.  Minimum cumulative undergraduate 3.0 gpa
  2.  Two references, at least one from the major adviser
  3.  Required Praxis I/Praxis Core score or acceptable SAT,ACT, or GRE scores
  4.  Submit application after the completion of EDU 1141 & PSY 2209 and no later than March 15th, spring of the junior year

 

Courses Required for the Major


Students admitted to this 5-year program must complete the courses required for the major as well as the specific courses required in the Department for those seeking teacher certification iIn the following areas: Social Studies, History, Political Science, Sociology, English, Biology,Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics, French, German, and Spanish.

 

Education Required Courses


Courses required in Education are both at the undergraduate and graduate lavels and should be taken in the order identified by the advisor.  Specifically,

  1. During bachelor’s degree: EDU 1141, PSY 2209, EDU2240/2140, EDU 2100  
  2. After admission to the graduate program: RDG 532/532P
  3. 5th year, master’s degree: SED 572, SOC 508, EDU 503, EDU 61x/61xP, EDU 594, RDG 534, EDU 599, EDU 602, EDU 603
