Department of Chemistry

Department Chair: Michael Polen, Ph.D.

Description

Chemistry is the study of the world around us through the lens of atoms and molecules. The study of chemistry includes chemical and physical properties, reactions, kinetics, thermodynamics, and analytical and computational methods. These are accomplished through both theoretical and hands-on experiences.

The chemistry major gives students a strong foundation in chemical knowledge and experimentation in preparation for either industry or advanced studies. Recent graduates have continued their careers in numerous ways including earning advanced degrees at graduate school, starting careers in the chemical industry, and working at various government agencies. A subset of chemistry majors decide to begin their teaching careers by earning a minor in secondary education; often these students begin teaching the semester after they graduate.

Departmental Writing Requirement:

The Department of Chemistry extends writing throughout the major. Students majoring in Chemistry are required to take two required writing intensive courses as noted with the # symbol.

Total Program Hours: 54

Required Additional Course for Pre-Professional

Including medical, dental, and veterinary Pre-professional Programs   .

Requirements for Departmental Honors
