ETM 530 - Institutional and Structural Inequities and Education

Credits: 3
This course will challenge students to move beyond an understanding of racism as individual or interpersonal, and to grapple with the forms and patterns of inequity based on race and ethnicity at the institutional level. Students will examine how the historical roots of racism continue to impact current policies and practices, and how contemporary institutions (such as education, housing, economics, employment, immigration, prison, and politics) work together to disadvantage people of color by denying them access to material, social and civic resources. Analyzing how educational policies and practices perpetuate institutional inequities, candidates will develop practices that seek to disrupt inequities and to provide more equitable outcomes for students from oppressed groups.
