RDG 560 - Reading Recovery Teacher Training


Credits: 3
Note This is delivered in two parts, A and B, fall and spring semesters respectively. Each semester is 3 credits.
This course is designed to prepare experienced teachers to implement specialized reading methods for use with young children with literacy acquisition difficulties, specifically reading and writing difficulties. Reading Recovery Teachers-in -Training learn to observe, record, and analyze the reading and writing behaviors of individual children. During 24 hours of summer assessment training, participants are trained in the administration of the Observation Summary assessment instrument. Through class presentations and activities, tutoring of individual children, and reading and written assignments, Reading Recovery Teachers-in-Training develop an understanding of emergent literacy theory and practice and are prepared to implement Reading Recovery procedures with first-grade children who are making slow progress. Reading Recovery Teachers-in-Training must tutor four children daily in a practicum that is closely supervised by a trained Reading Recover Teacher Leader. Principals of Reading Recovery schools are kept informed of the progress of Reading Recovery Teachers-in-Training.
