GRN 516 - Dementia and Older Adults


Credits: 3
Prerequisites GRN 501 and GRN 506
This course will explore cognitive impairment in older adults, and it will focus on cognition in the normal brain and the changes that occur with the development and progression of the dementia syndrome. Particular attention will be paid to the pathophysiological changes associated with the various neurodegenerative diseases (such as Alzheimer’s Disease)and the resulting symptoms and functional changes experienced in both the psychiatric and physical domains. Attention will be paid to the socioeconomic impact of dementia on the family and loved ones of the afflicted individual as well as the impact of dementing illnesses on society, nationally and globally.
