Character: McDaniel College, recognized nationally among “40 Colleges that Change Lives” and U.S. News and World Report top-tier liberal arts colleges, is a four-year private college of the liberal arts and sciences offering more than 60 undergraduate programs of study, including dual and student-designed majors, plus 20 highly regarded graduate programs. Location: 30 miles northwest of Baltimore, 56 miles north of Washington, D.C. The 160-acre campus overlooks Westminster, Maryland, Carroll County’s largest town and county seat.

Class Size: An average class size of 15 students and student-faculty ratio of 12:1 puts leadership opportunities and personalized education within every student’s reach. First-year seminars are limited to 15 students.
Undergraduate students: 1,600 students from 37 states and 27 countries; 47 percent men, 53 percent women; 80 percent live on campus.
Graduate students: 1,560 degree-seeking graduate students from 18 states in approximately 20 programs, including Counseling, Deaf Education, Gerontology, Human Resource Development, School Library Media, and Education specialties from Administration to Curriculum and Instruction to Reading and Elementary Mathematics Instructional Leadership.
Faculty: 135 faculty members from 16 countries; virtually all hold the most advanced degrees in their disciplines. All courses and laboratories are taught by regular faculty members, not teaching assistants.
Honor Societies: One of only 280 U.S. colleges and universities with a Phi Beta Kappa chapter. Also on campus are 20 other honor societies, most nationally affiliated with long-standing charters, recognizing accomplishments in academics and leadership.
Honors Program: Students in the top 10 percent of their class with outstanding academic records and leadership potential are invited to apply for the Honors Program. All accepted students are awarded academic scholarships. Members take specially designed courses, participate in extracurricular activities and field trips, and may reside in Honors housing.
Research Opportunities: Each year students and professors across all disciplines collaborate on more than 250 research projects. Many students are published co-authors and national presenters of professional papers before they receive their degrees.
Programs of Study: McDaniel College offers more than 60 programs of study, including teacher certification and student-designed majors. Among the choices are 5-year B.A.-M.S. programs in Music Education, Psychology/Gerontology, Psychology-Social Work/Counseling, and Special Education. Also offered are pre-professional programs including pre-med, pre-law, pre-engineering, and pre-deaf education.
Off-campus Programs: The College offers countless opportunities for off-campus study both within the United States and overseas. Among them: our own central European campus in Budapest, Hungary, plus student exchange programs in Brussels, Belgium, and Glasgow, Scotland.
Experiential learning: About one-third of McDaniel students study abroad for academic credit, and about 40 percent complete at least one internship. Nearly 75 percent of students perform community service by the time they graduate.
Athletics: More than one-third of McDaniel students participate on one or more of 24 athletic teams – 12 men’s and 12 women’s – that compete in Division III of the NCAA and the Centennial Conference. Since 2004, McDaniel has captured Centennial Conference team titles in football, women’s basketball, men’s and women’s golf and softball, and many McDaniel athletes have earned individual conference championships.
Activities: More than 100 student groups, clubs and organizations; 15 percent of students belong to the eight national and local sororities and fraternities with chapters on campus.
Financial Aid & Scholarships: 90 percent of students receive grants, scholarships, loans, or work-study employment. About 60 percent receive need-based awards, from $200 to full tuition, annually. The College awards about $24 million each year through its scholarship and grant programs.
Rankings: McDaniel landed on A lists of national liberal arts colleges in rankings in U.S. News and World Report, Washington Monthly and Parade magazines. The college is in the first tier among national liberal arts colleges, one of America’s A+ Colleges for B Students, and consistently among top choices of guidance counselors across the country.
