MUS 1128 - Making Rock

Credits: 4
Where does Rock come from and how is it made? What are the creative processes of making and performing rock? What are the social forces that govern the sounds, and who gets to be successful making those sounds? Students in this class will explore the African-American origins of Rock and study how social forces have changed the music as well as who has the power and authority to make the music. Because rock often represents cultural rebellion, it is the perfect site to study the intersection of marginalization and expression. Students in this class will learn about rock from the inside out by making the music and by studying who is – and who is not – a Rock Star.
McDaniel Plan: Creative Expression; Multicultural
