Education Minor

Elementary
Students interested in teaching at the elementary level (grades 1-6) in Maryland public schools may major in any academic program at McDaniel College and complete a core set of elementary education requirements. Typically, elementary education minors choose to major in Psychology or Sociology , areas which address human growth and development and the behavior of individuals in groups, as these majors are most applicable to developing learners in the elementary grades. Upon completion of McDaniel’s approved elementary education program, and the Bachelor’s degree with the minor in education, candidates will be eligible for initial teaching certification at the elementary level in Maryland. Students who desire certification in another state should become familiar with certification requirements in that state and discuss plans with an education advisor. - Maryland required PRAXIS I, SAT, or ACT scores
- Maryland required PRAXIS II scores in appropriate content area
- Successful completion of the portfolio requirement
Secondary
Students interested in teaching at the secondary level (grades 7-12) in Maryland public schools must major in the academic subject that they plan to teach (Biology , Chemistry , English , French , German , Mathematics , Physics , Spanish , or Social Studies with a major in History , Political Science , or Sociology ) and complete a core set of secondary education requirements. In some academic areas, specific courses are required of education minors. Students are encouraged to meet with department advisors as soon as possible to incorporate these required courses in their program planning for the major. Please note that certification to teach Social Studies requires a major in History, Political Science and International Studies, or Sociology. Upon completion of McDaniel’s approved program in the subject area, and the Bachelor’s degree with the minor in education, candidates will be eligible for initial teaching certification at the secondary level in Maryland. Students who desire certification in another state should become familiar with certification requirements in that state and discuss plans with an education advisor.
Students may complete a Five-Year program leading to initial certification in Maryland in both a secondary education content area and Special Education. This program will result in a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Science degree. Core Secondary Education Required Courses

PreK-12
Students interested in teaching Art , Music , or Physical Education in Maryland public schools must major in that academic subject and complete a core set of secondary education requirements. In some academic majors, specific courses are required of education minors. Students are encouraged to meet with department advisors as soon as possible to incorporate these required courses in their program planning for the major. Upon completion of McDaniel’s approved program in the subject area, and the Bachelor’s degree with the minor in education, candidates will be eligible for initial teaching certification at all grade levels (PreK-12) in Maryland. Students who desire certification in another state should become familiar with certification requirements in that state and discuss plans with an education advisor.
With careful planning, students are able to complete the Music major/ Education minor in four years or in four years with a ninth semester in full-time student teaching. These program options will result in a Bachelor of Arts degree. However, students may complete a Five-Year program leading to initial certification in Maryland in Music. This program will result in a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master of Science degree.
