MUS 1160 - Drumming from Africa to the Americas Credits: 4 This course teaches students the techniques and rhythms of three related drumming styles. We start the semester in Ghana with music of the Ewe and Asante people. From there we follow the progression of West African music to the Americas, first to Cuba and the music of the bata drums, which accompany the rituals of the Afro Cuban religion of Santeria, and then to the United States where we learn some of the rhythms from New Orleans, the place that West African music first became part of US culture. MUS 1161 - Global Drumming Traditions Credits: 4 This course teaches students the techniques and rhythms of three drums: the kanjira, a small tambourine from South India used in folk and classical music; daf, a large Kurdish frame drum associated with Sufi ceremonies; and the riqq, the Arab tambourine, the primary accompaniment drum of Arab classical music. MUS 1162 - West African Drumming Culture Credits: 4 This course focuses on the Griot Cultures of West Africa and the associated drumming techniques of the West African Djembe. As students learn to play the Djembe through oral tradition, they will learn about Griots and Griot culture through the stories that accompany the drumming. The music will culminate in an end of term performance. The cultural content will conclude with a paper including both research and reflection. MUS 4206 - Music Capstone I Credits: 2 The Senior Capstone is an experience in which students demonstrate critical thinking in oral and written presentations, in the interpretation of music in their own performance and/or the performances of others. This may be fulfilled by combining performance, presentation, and written document in any combination that demonstrates these critical thinking skills, appropriate to the student’s concentration, and approved by the student’s studio teacher and capstone advisor.
