PHI 3319 - Black Feminism(s)Credits: 4 This course will explore the fields of Black feminist theory and thought. In so doing we will explore the work of Black feminist scholars that span the period of chattel slavery through the twenty first century. We will work through materials that include theoretical works, non-fiction, fiction, literature, poetry, and film. This course is intended to provide you with an understanding of how Black women in the United States have navigated a world where it is believed that “all the women are white, and all the Black are men.” Attention will be given to the ways in which Black feminism has emerged alongside hegemonic forms of feminism and Black/African American studies. The course will work to answer questions that include, but are not limited to: (1) What is Black feminism(s)? (2) How has Black feminism/thought changed? (3) What is the relevance of Black feminism(s) in the 21st century?
