ENG 1171 - Best Stories You’ve Never ReadCredits: 4 Jewett, Freeman, Chopin, Porter, O’Connor, Jackson, Walker, Beattie, Russell … many of the best short story writers of the past 200 years were women. In this course, we will explore the role of the short story in the national and individual psyches and examine the emergence and persistence of themes such as motherhood, misogyny, racism, the power of language and silence, and the effects of the past. Recognizing that no one group of women can speak for all, we will consider women from various American cultures in their historical, social, political, economic, and psychological context. Analyses of readings will be expressed daily in both class discussions and writing. The primary objective of the course is a more acute understanding of representations of men and women and the implications of sex and gender for art and life.
