MUS 1160 - Drumming from Africa to Americas Credits: 4 This course teaches students the techniques and rhythms of three related drumming styles. We start the semester in Ghana with music of the Ewe and Asante people. From there we follow the progression of West African music to the Americas, first to Cuba and the music of the bata drums, which accompany the rituals of the Afro Cuban religion of Santeria, and then to the United States where we learn some of the rhythms from New Orleans, the place that West African music first became part of US culture. MUS 1161 - Global Drumming Traditions Credits: 4 This course teaches students the techniques and rhythms of three drums: the kanjira, a small tambourine from South India used in folk and classical music; daf, a large Kurdish frame drum associated with Sufi ceremonies; and the riqq, the Arab tambourine, the primary accompaniment drum of Arab classical music. After a review of the elements of music and the structure/function of the nervous system, students will examine how concepts such as musical training and style correlate with brain function, how the brain responds to emotional content in music, and how music impacts hemispheric laterality. Special topics, such as creativity, the Mozart effect and the relationship between musical genius and creativity will be examined. MUS 3200 - Careers and Professional Communication in Music Credits: 4 This course will examine the various careers to which a music degree may lead and the types of communications appropriate in each. Students will identify and explore different types of music-related professional-level writing, as well as practice music-specific language conventions and vocabulary appropriate for different audiences.
