                | CHE 2217 - Organic Chemistry ICredits: 4A systematic study of the compounds of carbon based upon functional reactivity with emphasis on the physicochemical approach to reaction mechanisms. In addition to a treatment of basic molecular structure, stereochemistry, equilibria, kinetics and nomenclature, the chemistry of alkanes, alkenes, alkynes, aromatics, and alkyl halides is studied. A coordinated laboratory incorporates classical techniques (recrystallization, distillation, and extraction), analytical methods (chromatography and IR spectroscopy), and molecular modeling. Course includes a 4-hr laboratory.
