This is no mere coincidence – the urgent need for governments, companies, non-governmental organizations, and individuals to safeguard themselves against cyber criminals and cyber-attacks from other countries is increasing exponentially. Every aspect of life – from our hospitals and power grids to our cars and home computers – is at risk and needs protection. Recognizing this rapidly rising area of need and career growth, McDaniel College has partnered with MAGIC (The Mid-Atlantic Gigabit Innovation Collaboratory in Westminster MD) to provide a hands-on 2 credit experiential learning opportunity in the field of Cyber Security. The experience is comprised of I) Hackathon, which is a three-day event in which students will work in terms of 2 to 5 people in order to first identify a problem and then design, build, and promote a computer app that tackles that problem and II) Capture The Flag: a one-day entry-level cybersecurity competition in which students work in teams of 2 to 4 people to use hacking tools to solve puzzles and earn points. Students will also participate in discussion over assigned readings and will write reflections before during and after the 4 days. McDaniel Plan: Experiential
