PSI 1117 - Food Politics & PolicyCredits: 4 Politics and public policy shape what we eat, and what we eat can be a political act. How can we ensure a safe, affordable, and nutritious food supply? How do we fight food insecurity and promote equitable access to healthy food? How do we balance the interests of agribusiness with the rights of agricultural workers and small farmers? How do we limit animal suffering and pollution from factory farms? And critically, how do we build a food system that contributes less to climate change and can adapt to a changing climate? This course examines how government taxation, regulation, and subsidies can and should shape our lives. It also considers the political interests and coalitions that work to shape food policy. While the course emphasizes American politics, it will also consider international examples and global issues.
